Understanding the Brain with John Dowling (BS 153)

Episode 153 of Brain Science is an interview with Harvard neuroscientist John Dowling. We talk about his latest book Understanding the Brain: From Cells to Behavior to Cognition with a special focus on vision. I first featured Dr. Dowling’s work back in BSP 4 and I am making this episode available as free extra content for users of the free Brain Science mobile app.

Understanding the Brain is a book intended for students in other disciplines who want to get an overview of neuroscience. Meanwhile, those who are interested in more detail about vision research may want to read Vision: How It Works and What Can Go Wrong, which Dr. Dowling wrote with his brother Joseph.

  • Unfortunately I have had to cancel our 2019 trip to Australia because too few people signed up. I still very much want to visit Australia and to meet up with some of the many Aussie listeners who have sent me emails of encouragement over the years.

  • Last month I announced a change in the rates for Premium subscribers, but please note that as long as your subscription remains active your old rate remains in effect. Also, moving forward, ad-free content will be available only to Patreon supporters who pledge at least $10 per month, but everyone who pledges at least $3 will get episode transcripts.

  • Brain Science has a large loyal audience, but in 2019 I hope to reach more new listeners. Besides your word of mouth, reviews in iTunes are very helpful. If you post a review and send a screen shot to brainsciencepodcast@gmail.com you will be eligible to win an Amazon gift certificate.
