More on CI Therapy with Ed Taub (BSP 120)

I have just posted the second half of my recent interview with Dr. Ed Taub the pioneer of Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CI Therapy), which is a revolutionary approach to rehabilitation for stroke and other central nervous system injuries. In BSP 119 Dr. Taub explained the principles behind CI Therapy, which is probably the first rehab technique that explicitly harnesses brain plasticity. In BSP 120 we explore the crucial role of learned non-use (lose it or lose it) and how CI Therapy overcomes this obstacle to recovery.

We also talked about how Dr. Taub and his colleagues are expanding CI Therapy beyond stroke patients to help patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and even spinal cord injuries. They currently recruiting patients with TBI with funding from the Department of Defense (civilians can apply). See below to learn more.

One key idea that Dr. Taub emphasized during our conversation is that patients can continue to improve for years after leaving formal rehabilitation, but this requires that they have clear guidance about how to transfer what they learn to real life. He said “We do not really know what  the limits of rehabilitation are."
